Three of the most-requested services we offer all do the same thing — lighten the hair — but they create very different effects. Here’s how to think about which one suits you.
First, a useful distinction: these terms describe the look and the placement, not always a separate tool. Balayage, for instance, is a painting technique, and those painted pieces can be developed out in the open air or wrapped in foil to push more lift. So it’s less about “foils versus no foils” and more about the result you’re after.
Balayage is colour swept on by hand to create a soft, natural gradient with no harsh lines. It’s the most organic-looking option and the lowest maintenance, which is why it sits at the heart of what we do. Best for a lived-in, grown-on look you don’t have to chase.
Foils give more lift and more uniformity. Weaving sections and wrapping them in foil drives more heat and more lightening, so they’re the choice when you want real brightness, cooler tones, or to go noticeably lighter than your base. Placement can be full head, half head, or focused around the face. Best for maximum brightness and a polished, even result.
Babylights are very fine foils, woven through in delicate sections to mimic the natural highlights of childhood hair. They’re subtle, soft, and beautiful for adding light without obvious stripes. Best for a gentle, dimensional brightness, particularly around the hairline.
In practice, the right answer is often a blend — balayage through the lengths with a few babylights at the front, say — and the tone you finish on matters as much as the technique. Reading your hair and choosing the right combination is exactly where an experienced colourist earns their keep, and it’s what the consultation is for: we look at your natural base, what you’re starting with, and how much upkeep you want, then build from there. We colour throughout with Wella Professionals, which gives us the clean tones and reliable lift to deliver whichever route we land on. Not sure where you land? Book a complimentary consultation and we’ll map it out with you before any colour goes on.
